Receiving Images from the ISS via SSTV
What's Needed
Hardware
Software
Preferred Workflow
- Set up five minutes prior to AOS, set recording to 48khz recording rate, mono.
- Turn off squelch
- Hit record
- Start a two minute timer when I start hearing the transmission, reset when transmission is done and run again so you know when the next transmission will start.
I see some people who like to decode the image in realtime with an app or a laptop. If you're at home, sure, knock yourself out. I prefer to record the audio, and then process the audio on an app afterwards. This way, if there are any noises, I can re-run the app with a few changes to try and get the best image possible.
Avoiding Crooked or Noisy Images
The biggest tip I can provide from my experience is to not move the antenna during the transmission. My cleanest images have been from my car antenna, or moving my Arrow Antenna only twice (AOS heading, midway, and LOS heading).
